Recovering Foam Cushions

I’ve been on a mission this summer to recover older outdoor cushions so they actually fit our patio set chairs correctly, and have a fresh new look. Fabric crafts are often difficult for me because though I come from a long line of seamstresses, it’s more than obvious I didn’t inherit their natural sewing skills. But I’m being brave, I’ve got some time, and I’ve got plenty of Sunbrella red outdoor fabric —  I’m ready to give it a try!

FIrst up, trimming down the foam from the old cushions, so they will finally be the correct size! I started off trying to cut the foam with scissors. That’s absolutely ineffective. The foam bounces and squishes, and there’s no way to follow the line I’ve carefully drawn on the foam. Time to turn to Google.

Ah-ha! I found it! An electric knife! You know you have one that you might use once or twice a year to carve that roast? Well, here’s another way to get your money’s worth from that handy appliance. In less than two minutes, I had my first cushion cut down to the size I needed. Like magic! So now I’m on to cutting the other cushions. Wish me luck, and I’ll check back when I start the sewing portion of the project!!
